- Traditionally, very simple: push onto a stack
- Network parameter issue: network byte order
- need to be able to send arbitrary structures over
- socket library’s ntohs(), htonl(), etc. insufficient
- more than just integers- floats, doubles, whole structures!
- Sun’s RPC uses XDR, the External Data Representation library
- a whole lecture in itself
- basically, bundles (“marshalls”, “serializes”) ala HW #2
