Graduate ProgramChoosing a Doctoral CommitteeThe Ph.D. student must choose a research area and faculty advisor. The faculty advisor must be a full-time, tenure track member of the RPI faculty. Next a doctoral committee should be chosen in consultation with the research advisor. The committee must include at least four full-time RPI faculty members, of which one is the committee chair, all with the rank of assistant professor or higher. Clinical, research, and emeritus professors may serve on the committee but do not count as full-time RPI faculty. At least one of the members of the committee should be from outside the Computer Science Department. Thus, if your outside member is a full-time faculty member in another RPI department, you need only four committee members, but if your outside member is not a member of the RPI faculty, you will need five committee members. Students are encouraged to choose an outside member who is not a member of the RPI faculty. After you have chosen the members of your committee, you must fill out a Nomination of Doctoral Committee form. For any committee members who are not also members of the RPI faculty, you should attach a copy of the curriculum vitae. After you have completed the form and gotten signatures from your committee members, give it to Sharon Simmons. She will have the Chair sign it. After the form has been signed, Sharon will distribute photocopies to you and to Terry Hayden and will send the original to the Graduate School for approval. If you need to change your committee membership later, you can submit another Nomination of Doctoral Committee form or you can prepare a memo to be submitted by the department chair to the Graduate School. If a member of your committee retires or otherwise leaves Rensselaer before your graduation, the person may continue to count as one of your full-time members if
