School aid

Financial aid for graduate study often comes from the institution you attend. This aid may take the form of fellowships, research assistantships, or teaching assistantships. It will often pay for your tuition and provide a stipend for living expenses.

Outside fellowships

You can apply for fellowships on your own. RPI's Office of Graduate Education provides some relevant links at http://gradoffice.rpi.edu/update.do?artcenterkey=156 and you will find much more than this by searching the web. It will take some time to find and apply for these fellowships, and many students don't bother to do it. However, if you do get a fellowship this way, not only will your graduate study be funded, you will also have a greater chance of admission to the program of your choice.

Federal aid and loans

Federal aid includes loans and work study. Apply at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Application deadline for federal aid is June 30, but the form can also be used for state or school aid, and those programs may have earlier deadlines.
