UNC paths for mounting directories

path resource Description
\\ CS Unix home directories
\\ CS Department print server for windows
\\sambasrv\swinstall RCS RPI Software installation
note Connect to RCS resources using your RCS login and password


Command line

  • cd
  • mkdir ./mntpoint
  • mount_smbfs //${unix_login}${unix_login} ./mntpoint
  • mount_smbfs // ./mntpoint

Mounting your home directory from the desktop

  • Click on desktop to bring up the default upper tool bar
  • Click on Go --> Connect to Server
  • In the Address box supply: smb://${username}
  • Click connect
  • In the SMB/CIFS Authentication window supply your UNIX username and password.
  • The workgroup field can be left blank
  • Click OK
  • Your home directory will be mounted and you will find an icon on your desktop labeled with your username.


Mounting your home directory from the desktop

  • Click on the Start/Windows button
  • Click on Computer
  • Select Map[N]etworkDrive
    • Select a drive letter to mount the share onto.
    • Type in the UNC path to mount (\\\login)
    • Click on the box next to Connect using different credentials
    • To make the share persistent select the Reconnect at logon checkbox.
    • Click Finish


  • cd ~ -or- use mount_smbfs instructions from the mac section.
