Avoiding Web Scams

  • Always suspect requests for information that you did not initiate.
  • No legitimate entity should ever ask for your password or personal information over email.
    • Labstaff and other campus administrators have privileged access and will not require your password to diagnose problems.
    • Banks & businesses have your account information on file and would never ask for it over an insecure medium like email.
  • Never click on links supplied in an email message asking for personal information, they may redirect you somewhere unexpected.
    • Navigate to the company's main site if you think you may actually need to update your information.
    • Safer option is to type the company's web URL into the location bar at the top of your browser.
    • Safest option is to find the company phone number on a monthly statement and call customer service directly.
  • WebBrowserPlugins can be installed for added security
  • If you are in doubt, feel free to contact labstaff or stop by Amos Eaton 131
