[astro] conjugate gradient descent stuff

I've figured out the problem with the CGD not converging as fast as it
should, and it's a problem with the
line search function. I have sum of squares working in salsa, and it's
finishing in under 30 iterations every
time, while gradient descent takes 70-100. Once we can figure out why
the astronomy stuff in the MPI
version is hanging i can start to get some results on the bluegene.
