Your mission is to take an image that looks like one of the following:
I need to generate hand tracings of the blood vessels on a retinal image. I need at least 5 people to hand trace each image (i.e. I need 5 DIFFERENT hand tracings to comapre differences and to build the 'gold standard'). Your job is to label/color-in each pixel that you believe to be a blood vessel on an image.
Instructions
1. First, get the tracing tool here. This is a windows executable. It is not fail-proof so save your work often...
The instructions for how to use the program are under Labeling->Help on Labeling on the
menu bar. Use it to get started. It gives step by step instructions (i.e. the help message
changes depending what part of the labelling process you are in). So, read the help, follow the directions, read the
help, follow the directions and keep going until you don't need help any more.
Right mouse button draws, left mouse erases. Shift+mouse block fills....
2. Then trace each image listed below. ONLY LABEL VESSELS - i.e. EVERY PIXEL THAT YOU BELIEVE IS A BLOOD VESSEL! Do not guess. You must be able to to determine that it is blood vessel to mark it as such. For each image, save your work as: original_file_name_your_initials.ppm. For example, for image im0077.pgm, I would save it as: im0077_kf.pgm. Always use the pgm file format even if the original file is of a different format (i.e. tif or png).
3. When you are done, FTP (anonymous) the finished image to ftp.cs.rpi.edu and place the work in private/fritzk2.
Hints
What works for me is to carefully trace the boundaries of the vessel and to then make a
polygon inside of the vessel by connecting the opposite sides. Then fill it using the
shift-mouse button combo.
You can view the image many different ways. I like to use the green channel which you can
find under Tools->Histogram->Greyscale).
Save your work often! If you change the magnification or the different channels of the image
too many times, the executable will seg fault.....
Depending on how skilled you are with the mouse, it can take 1-2 hours to
do an image.... I try to work in small intervals, working on a different quadrant/section at
a time. I then take a short break and come back to it...
