Use the ssh (secure shell) command
ssh ${login}@linux.cs.rpi.edu -p 22
Logging in using a terminal program like PuTTY, crt, securecrt
Begin by creating a new host entry in the terminal program.
Using PuTTY as an example
Enter "linux.cs.rpi.edu" as both the host name and Saved Session
Change other options in the left panel to taste ( screen/text color )
Click [S]ession to return back to the main menu
Click [S]ave to save the entry
Double click 'linux.cs.rpi.edu' in the Saved Sessions window to connect and login.

, provides the old method of remote access to the CSLab network.
This hostname is an alias for a pool of FreeBSD machines.
The hostname,
linux.cs.rpi.edu
, provides the current method of remote access to the CSLab network.
This hostname is an alias for a pool of Ubuntu machines.
