Logging in remotely

Logging in from the command line

  • Use the ssh (secure shell) command
  • ssh ${login}@linux.cs.rpi.edu -p 22

Logging in using a terminal program like PuTTY, crt, securecrt

  • Begin by creating a new host entry in the terminal program.
  • Using PuTTY as an example
    • Enter "linux.cs.rpi.edu" as both the host name and Saved Session
    • Change other options in the left panel to taste ( screen/text color )
    • Click [S]ession to return back to the main menu
    • Click [S]ave to save the entry
    • Double click 'linux.cs.rpi.edu' in the Saved Sessions window to connect and login.

Logging in using the campus VPN

Remote access machines

  • The hostname, remote.cs.rpi.edu, provides the old method of remote access to the CSLab network.
    • This hostname is an alias for a pool of FreeBSD machines.
  • The hostname, linux.cs.rpi.edu, provides the current method of remote access to the CSLab network.
    • This hostname is an alias for a pool of Ubuntu machines.
