Sophomore Year
After fleeing back to campus as early as possible (I came back a month early to work), I started my sophomore year with a bang. My friends and I were all "Ask-Me's", meaning that we were helping out at Orientation, directing First-Years and so on. Basically, it meant that we had 10 days on campus to play before classes started, which was a whole lot of fun.
Sophomore Year I returned to the same dorm where I had lived First Year, Severance, and in fact, I lived next door to my old room. Lindsay and I shared a fairly big double, and were downstairs from our friends Carrie and Jess, and upstairs from our friends Heather and Mary Ellen. So once again, Severance was the place to be. We had a whole lot of fun sophomore year: our first around-the-world party, as well as a whole lot other parties; more debate fun for Lindsay and me (this year we were the co-tournament directors, which was an adventure); more time in the Hoop; and various and sundry dramas, of course. What would a year at Wellesley be without drama? For spring break, Lindsay and I went to visit her family down in NC, which was a really good trip. We spent about half the time at their house in Winston-Salem, and the rest of the time at their house up on Lake Lure, near Asheville, which was just beautiful. Spring Weekend this year was excellent--Dar Williams came, and gave a really incredible concert. (Left, Mary Ellen, Heather, and Lindsay line-dancing in the hallway; right, Jessie, Lindsay, and Carrie at the Boston Marathon mid-point--right outside Munger!)
Classes were another variable adventure this year. First semester I took CS 111 (Intro to Computer Science), Phil 249 (Medical Ethics), Hist 327 (Zionism and Irish Nationalism), and German 231 (Advanced Studies in Language and Culture). About half-way through first semester, I decided I wanted to be a CS major, so proceeded with that intent. Thus, second semester I took CS 230 (Intro to Data Structures), Math 203 (Calc III), Hist 268 (Japanese Big Business), Phil 211 (Philosophy of Religion) and Eng 203 (Short Narrative). However, half-way through second semester, I decided I no longer wanted to be a CS major (I couldn't stand my math class and ended up dropping it, and my data structures class was pure insanity), and thus decided to default into being a history major, as I had taken the most classes in that. I ended up sticking with that, though I kept adding more and more CS classes, so that I was nearly a CS major as well.
