RA Work

January 1997 - Present

I am working with Ephraim Glinert, Ed Rogers, Cheryl Geisler, and John Tobin on the construction of The Collaborative Classroom. This showcase classroom is RPI's premiere teaching space and will be located in the Troy Building. Plans are to have it up and running by August 1997.

So far I've just been reading papers, going to meetings, and trying to figure out what everybody is doing. Of course there's lots of room for ideas. Click here to see some.

August 1994 - August 1995

I am working with Martin Hardwick and Dave Spooner on the National Information Infrastructure Interchange Protocol. Basically the idea is to design a system that facilitates communication between industrial organizations. An automobile manufacturer can communicate with a parts supplier and exchange design information about a fuel pump.

Most of the work here at RPI is focused on how engineering specifications and data are exchanged between organizations. RPI played a significant role in development of the STEP model and tools for information exchange.

Here's the stuff that I've done as an RA:

Investigation into virtual corporations. corporation? Why is it a big deal?
Learning about STEP tools and the EXPRESS data interchange language.
Developed CFI Session Model definition in EXPRESS.
Wrote an EXPRESS to IDL compiler for use with OMG CORBA. OMG Corba will be the backbone of the service and data management part of the NIIIP system.
Although my primary interest is in GIS, I've found the area of Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing very interesting because a lot of the core research areas are the same. Here are some examples:
How do we stuff engineering data into a database?
Long term transactions
Concurrent Engineering
Data Exchange
