When I was going to go to Venezuela to visit my sister, she asked me what my Spanish name was so she would know how to introduce me to people. When I took Spanish class in school, they called me Teresa, but I never felt a connection to that name. So I searched the internet for names in Spanish beginning with T, and I found Tierra. The name has two drawbacks: 1) it's not normally used as a name, it's more of a word. It was listed on the lists of Spanish names, but I've never heard of anyone named Tierra. 2) Native English speakers, including myself, aren't very good at pronouncing it. On the other hand, the meaning (earth), really resonated with me, so I decided to stick with Tierra for my Spanish name, because none of the others really felt like me. Tierra has a number of connotations for me. One is being a down-to-earth outdoorsy, person. Another is taking good care of our home, the earth. A third is looking at people and other creatures as all fellow beings, all part of the earth, which is greater than the divisions we create based on things like country and religion. And to me, "Tierra" sounds more like a Spanish version of "Terry" than "Teresa" does.
