- File System Comparison (a brief report)
The objectives of this assignment are:
You are to write a brief (no more then two pages!) report that compares the implementation of two different file systems. You may choose any file systems you want from Chapters 10,11 in the text (basically NTFS or any Unix/Linux file system).
You may not pick any of the file systems described in Chapter 6!
Your report should not provide the details of how each file system is implemented, but should instead simply discuss the major differences. You should address issues such as:
Data structures used to manage the file system (d.s. used by the OS in memory, as well as d.s. stored on the disk itself).
Complexity (how much OS code is needed to support the file system).
Reliability
Efficiency
Scalability
Extensibility
Any other attribute that ends with a 'y'
Use any resources you can to complete this assignment (don't just rely on the Text - use the WWW)!
You report must be either a plain text file, MS Word or PDF. Feel free to include diagrams, tables, etc.
Please keep in mind that you must convince us (in two pages or less), that you understand what a file system is, that you understand file system design and implementation issues, and the you are familiar with the two file systems you are comparing.
Feel free to submit a 20 page report if you must, but be aware that your grade will depend on the first two pages only!
- How to Submit
