| Question: | How can we use monte.cs.rpi.edu to do this assignment? |
| Answer: | Each student has an account on monte, to get started you need to see Dave to get the password set. monte.cs.rpi.edu is running Apache with support for PHP. To create
and run a PHP program you just need to create a file named
something.php and put this file in your
Windows Users: You don't need to login and create a Unix terminal session to use monte as a web server. All you need is a sftp client program and you can transfer files to/from your home directory on monte. I use the ssh client from www.ssh.org (this includes a program that lets you log in, and also a program that lets you transfer files). I believe that secureCRT also allows you to transfer files pretty easily. Note that some people in the class have done this kind of stuff before (used a remote web server), but I know there are some who have not done this and are lost... Please speak up and we can use some class time to demonstrate how to get started. This goes for pretty much all the topics/exercises in the course - don't hesitate to ask for help from Dave or anyone else in the class. Your success in the course depends on working on web systems, not on Unix proficiency, prior knowledge of fancy tools, etc. |
