I have requested CS accounts (and password-resets for those who don't
know their passwords) for those students who filled out the
sign-up form late. All students should now have a CS account. This
is important since our next class will be the first lecture on CGI
programming. If you have never logged in to the CS machines, please
do so immediately and change your temporary password. If your
temporary password has expired, email labstaff ASAP and request a
password reset.

I had eariler posted an announcement concerning backticks and STDERR.
The information I posted there was incorrect. The true relationship
between backticks and STDERR is that there is none. Backticks capture
only STDOUT. In the sample program I'd written, STDERR was
sent to the console as the backticked program was executing. The
program then printed the results of the backtick operation, making it
look like STDERR was printed before STDOUT. I hope this is clear - if
not, we will go over it in class Wednesday.
- Wednesday, September 11

I have just emailed labstaff, asking for new accounts to be created
for those students who reported not having an account when filling out
the sign-up form. For those students reporting not knowing their
password (and those with accounts who reported not knowing if they
have one), I have requeted password resets. Labstaff should be
contacting you via RPI email within the next week or so regarding your
account.

For those of you having trouble getting emacs to work with Tera Term
SSH, I have now posted my configuration
file. I'm doing this because I don't remember what was the magic
switch I threw years ago to make TeraTerm behave itself. Copy this
file into your Tera Term directory (over writing your own TERATERM.INI
file). You should edit it and replace "lallip" with your own RCS ID
in the DefaultUserName section.

The bookstore has just emailed me saying the texts for this course
have finally arrived. I'd suggest everyone go buy at least the Camel
asap.
-
In Wednesday's class, someone asked me a question to which I did not
know the answer. I informed that someone that I'd get the answer to
him by next week. Regrettably, I'm absent minded and have managed to
forget what the question was. If anyone recalls the question that was
asked, please let me know. If you are the student who asked the
question, my apologies.
