- The word "informating" was
coined by Shoshana Zuboff in her 1988 book,
In the Age of the Smart Machine, to describe the way that
information technology could be used to expand knowledge, particularly
in the workplace, in contrast to the concerns associated with
"automating" of work.

- Note that this graph is
mainly the work of an Rensselaer undergraduate student, Phillip
Thorne. Phillip had much better ideas than I did about how to depict
the hierarchical relationships between concepts, and I think this is a
small but telling illustration of the kind of mutual benefit to be
gained by faculty/student informating projects.
