The Role of the FDRC:
The role of the Faculty Dean of Residential Commons (FDRC) is to help execute RPI's CLASS Initiative, which was designed to enhance the educational experience of RPI's students by providing activities that promote personal growth, build professional and leadership skills, and broaden perspectives of one community and the arts.
CLASS is being implemented, in part, by developing a residential commons structure within RPI's residence halls (similar to those at Yale, UPenn, Harvard, and many other universities) and an administrative staff that will manage the commons and design CLASS activities and events. Most of these activities will occur within the commons, but some will occur in venues in order to increase positive interactions with the surrounding communities.
There will be residential commons (a.k.a. residential colleges at some schools) composed of clusters of RPI's residence halls, another commons is defined as all of the Greek houses, and a final one is defined as all off-campus housing. Each commons will have a set of Fellows from RPI and the community, who will be advisors and mentors to the students of that commons, and who will share their unique knowledge and experience with the students in informal settings.
As a member of the RPI's faculty, the FDRC is the primary liaison between the Residence Life staff (who are the primary implementors of CLASS) and the faculty. The goals of the FDRC are to create programs that:
- Give students and faculty opportunities to get to know one another on a personal level.
- Give students more opportunities to develop personally and professionally, and to broaden their perspectives on media, arts, and their community.
Some of the events that have been promoted by the FDRC are below:
- Open discussions of career and life decisions.
- Student/faculty lunches upstairs in the Russell Sage Faculty Dining Hall.
- Saturday hikes followed by dessert and coffee.
- RPI Women's breakfast with Barbara Liskov, Turing Award winner.
- The Dean's Pockets: lunch and pool for fun.
- Robert Henke performance and brunch.
- Aly El-Tahry '77 breakfast: a MANE graduate who transitioned to a career in finance and banking.
All past and upcoming events can be found on the FDRC's facebook wall.
